| | August 20198he other day I sent my car to the garage for the periodic ser-vice. A while later the mechanic, after a visual inspection of the car, called me up several times to inform me of the status of some of the different parts of the vehicle which needed replacement and some which still had life left in those. We had a discussion and agreed on the work to be done. Now imagine a scenario where the service engineer knows everything about your car till the moment it has arrived at the ga-rage. It has been collecting real-time performance data on the vehicle from the sensors in the embedded systems to create a Digital Twin of my car.Tesla Automotive Predictive maintenance uses Digital Twin tech-nology for every electric car manu-factured, with constant stream of data transferred from vehicle to manufacturing plant. Volkswagen creates a digital avatar of its car models right from the point of as-sembly and throughout the lifecycle of the cars. Siemens Healthcare has creat-ed a digital twin of a human heart from the precise data of the patient from his or her wearable devices, lifestyle, genetic composition. This twin lets the surgeon see the actual impact on a patient's condition and the placement of electrodes in the heart before a heart bypass surgery even begins. It saves costs and ena-bles flawless surgery reducing the risks to the patient. In an ideal sce-nario, your doctor can track your health through your digital twin and alert you on time to take pre-caution should something be amiss. Likewise, in the retail industry, our social media and consumption data can create a Digital Twin of us open-ing fascinating marketing and com-munication opportunities between the digital avatar of the customer and the seller.Digital Twin is a virtual represen-tation of a physical object or system across its life-cycle. Per Gartner, it is an exact digital copy of a physical object. The digital copy mimics the actions of the real object in real-time. This is transforming everything from manufacturing, healthcare, retail, utilities, logistics & transportation, electronics, you name it. Growing at over 39 percent, the Digital Twin market is set to reach USD 30 billion in the next seven years from around USD 3 billion currently, per Zion Market Research. According to IDC 70 percent of manufacturers will use `digital twins' to conduct simulations and scenario evaluations, reducing equipment failures by 30 percent. The idea of creating a digital twin has been around since 2002, but it's only now due to the coming together of factors like inexpensive sensors, Internet Of Things (IoT), cloud technologies for storage & compute, IN MY OPINIONTBy Amitabh Ray, Managing Director, Ericsson Global Services IndiaI AM HAVING A DIGITAL TWIN Amitabh Ray
