These are trends that companies are to take lightly at their own peril. The changes made in these areas have altered the industry to an extent wherein the powers have shifted from the hands of vendors to those of the end customers. This is a huge change for an industry that has traditionally been controlled by companies with virtual monopolies that dictated customer behaviors. Some of the newest trends have not let down the energy and utilities segment. SaaS, social media, and Big data are slowly creeping into the veins of the utilities segment as they redefine how the industry functions. Common applications of predictive analytics include understanding patterns in the proper functioning of equipment, or the likeability of a certain product in a certain geographical location. By understanding future circumstances, companies are better able to manage budgets. As Gartner pointed out, smart grid investments will increase data quantity exponentially. New IT and OT applications including metering Infrastructures, smart appliances , micro grids and remote asset monitoring systems are going to redefine data variety, both structural and non structural. The utility segment has long trailed back when it came to cloud adoption citing security issues. But with the advent of big data and Analytics, it is inevitable for cloud deployment into areas such as, for example, smart meters and demand response coordination units. Early implementers are enterprises providing common data services to multiple utility entities, such as transmission system operators and cooperative associations. Similarly CIOs are interested in using social media as a customer acquisition and retention medium, especially when it comes to energy retailers. Social media holds importance as a consumer engagement channel to drive customer participation in energy efficient programs. Outage communications within the social spectrum is also increasing in importance for utilities. The need of the hour for this sector is the convergence of Informational procedures with operational procedures. More than any other industry in India, the utility sector faces the issue of understanding differentiators of OT and IT while engaging in hybrid projects that by contradiction, link the same.
