The construction industry ranks third among the 14 major sectors in terms of direct, indirect and induced effects in all sectors of the economy. With millennials coming online as real estate buyers, the impact of tech trends in Indian real estate is accelerating. Robot real estate brokers are not yet a reality. But hold that thought. While robot real estate brokers don't yet exist, REX Real Estate Exchange has created an Alexa-like tabletop box (Rex) that can answer many questions from prospective buyers. Besides, we're just entering the era of total virtualization. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) overlays digital information onto one's real life: that is, what you see in your immediate environment is augmented by additional images or words from a digital source. When Star Trek debuted 50 years ago, who would have thought the technology employed on the Starship Enterprise would one day be used on construction jobsites. I mean of course, I wasn't born to experience the awe first hand, but on a second thought communicating like that on a work place would have been the thing. Crew members carried a communicator, which looked much like yesterday's flip phones. The Combadge was a wearable communication device, and Lt. Uhura wore a wireless Bluetooth-like earpiece. When Captain Kirk asked a question or gave a command, the computer responded remarkably like Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa. The Replicator produced food, tools and other objects, much like today's 3-D printers. Technology has never failed to amaze me and I'm sure our readers share a similar whirlwind when they come across a new tech trend. In this edition of CIOReview India, we realized it's about time we give the stage to those wonder wielders who have transformed or are on the process to revolutionize the construction and real estate industry. Be it, a data driven construction project site or a web portal to manage an entire housing society, we got something for every time you raise your hand. Flip through and let us know what you think.
